Meeting STIR/SHAKEN Regulatory Compliance Before the Deadline
July 1 will be here before we know it. If your calls aren't yet digitally signed with full attestation to meet STIR/SHAKEN regulatory standards, it's time to act.
Why STIR/SHAKEN compliance matters
Simply put: unsigned calls get blocked. STIR/SHAKEN regulatory guidelines exist to restore trust in voice communications, preventing fraudsters from scamming consumers through robocalls and illegal spoofing while making sure legitimate calls still reach the recipient. Under the framework, every outbound number is assigned a trustworthiness level:
- Full Attestation (A): the carrier is confident in the caller's identity and their right to use the presented Caller ID.
- Partial Attestation (B): the carrier is confident in identity but not in the right to use the presented Caller ID.
- Gateway Attestation (C): the carrier can't certify identity or authorization — the call entered the network unsigned.
Ignoring the deadline will substantially affect outbound calls: contact rates decline, customers can't reach the business through their preferred channel, and both sides pay the price through mistrust, blocking, and spam mislabeling.
Work with your carriers
While the heavy lifting falls on carriers to meet the standard, call centers still need to be proactive:
- Contact your carrier(s) now and ask how their STIR/SHAKEN implementation is progressing.
- Understand how they plan to sign calls and determine a call source's trustworthiness.
- Ask for signed calls with the highest level of attestation.
- Set a date for testing before the deadline.
Red flags
