Key Questions to Ask Your STIR/SHAKEN Telecom Carrier

When it comes to STIR/SHAKEN telecom carriers, not all carriers are equal. The FCC gave voice carriers time to complete STIR/SHAKEN implementation, but not every carrier has finished the job — and there's significant confusion in the market about how to actually verify compliance.

Four questions worth asking

1. Are they an authorized SHAKEN service provider? If the answer isn't a confident yes, or the subject gets deflected, be concerned. Check iconectiv.com's list of authorized SHAKEN providers directly. Make test calls from your own dialer to confirm whether calls are tokenized and which attestation level they receive — A (fully verified), B (partially verified), or C (not verified) — since unverified calls get blocked far more often and only fully verified calls display a checkmark on major wireless handsets. Also confirm their calling routes: many legacy carriers default to best-cost routing, which often strips the SHAKEN header before it ever reaches the wireless handset, making the tokenizing pointless.

2. Do they offer clean Caller ID numbers? Ask whether they guide you on area-code mapping strategy and explain why algorithm companies are blocking or tagging your calls, with a dialing strategy that sidesteps those issues where possible.

3. Do they offer number reputation monitoring? Ask whether they proactively repair or replace flagged Caller ID numbers, and whether they'll guarantee an increase in answer rates. Have your contact rates trended up or down since switching carriers?

4. Do they share detailed CDR reporting? And do they meet with you regularly to discuss how to improve answer rates using that data?

What QVD offers as an authorized SHAKEN provider

QVD designs a Caller ID strategy per program to maximize contact rates, resting every assigned number for a year and verifying it against reputation databases before issuing it, then storing the display name in CNAM as the carrier of record. Our Monitoring & Remediation service loads numbers into the largest authentication hubs, covering over 50% of US handsets directly and using real-time monitoring for the rest (AT&T and T-Mobile), repairing or replacing flagged numbers before they hurt contact rates. And our SHAKEN Elastic SIP trunking tokenizes calls with full A attestation so they display as verified on all major wireless carriers. Clients using this combination see an average 38% increase in contact rates.
